As we celebrate the birthday of one of modern hip-hop's most innovative young voices, Earl Sweatshirt, let's take a closer look at some of his most impressive verses. Earl, a former member of the Odd Future collective, has made a name for himself with his introspective lyrics and unique production style. In honour of his 29th birthday, here are three tracks which showcase Earl at his best.
New Faces v2 (feat. Earl Sweatshirt and Da$h)
Mac Miller
"And I don't look as stupid when I talk now. And everybody at the show look astounded."
The late Mac Miller enlisted Earl to deliver the opening verse on one of the final songs on his 2014 mixtape "Faces" and did he ever perform. Evolving past the monotone voice that he was known for up until that point, Earl Sweatshirt comes through with an passionate 28-bar verse laced with witty entendres, clever sports references, and deep introspection as he celebrates his newly found confidence both as a musician but also as a person.
AM // Radio (feat. Wiki)
Earl Sweatshirt
"B-tch, if your n-gga had Supreme we was the reason he copped it."
Earl Sweatshirt's 2015 studio album "I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside" is a stark and gritty exploration of the rapper's inner thoughts. "AM // Radio" finds Earl spitting a lyrically dense verse over a brooding, industrial beat coming across as braggadocios as he drops one of the most iconic fashion bars of 2010s hip-hop.
Chum
Earl Sweatshirt
"Searching for a big brother, Tyler was that. And plus he like how I rap, the blunted mouse in the trap."
This one should come as no surprise. "Chum" is the defining song of Earl's debut album "Doris". Written upon his return from his forced stay in Samoa, the song portrays his struggles of growing up without a father, the influence of Odd Future members, and his personal immaturity. The reflective lyrics are delivered in Earl's signature monotonous style, which deeply resonated with his early fans.
